I have been looking at different styles of pictograms in order to help the development of my own.

There is a variety of different styles and interesting things you can do with the pictograms, as seen in some of the images above.

Because my own pictograms are going to be used within the context of a care home, they need to be clear, practical and easy for the elderly to interpret and understand. This means that more abstract and contemporary approaches may not be suitable for my own wayfinding.

Despite this, I don't believe that an attractive and modern approach has to be tossed aside to meet the requirements - it is about finding a middle ground between good design and good functionality.

I have started sketching up some initial ideas

I have experimented with a couple of different styles of each symbol. For the male and female toilet symbols, I started with a blocky, square style. I felt this was too futuristic, so instead looked at more rounded style. I felt this was a softer and more gentle approach, but perhaps too confusing for the elderly.

I continued to experiment with a variety of different pictograms
