OUGD503 - Responsive - Starpack - Metal Tin Designing

The main part of the brief is that the container for the tea/coffee is made of metal.

  • Metal offers great scope for creative design using different finishes including:
    • print finishes;
    • varnishes – high gloss, matt, crackle finish;
    • use of colour;
    • bare metal;

I decided to do a few sketches of potential shapes/designs I could use for my set of 3 tins.

- Round, cylindrical tins = look good, very sleek and contemporary but not ideal for tessellation/storage

- Rectangular, tall tins = good tessellation/storage, makes the most of the space but not as sleek/clunkier than a cylindrical shape

- Gimmick shapes (heart/star etc) = very particular selling point, fun and playful but can be seen as tacky, not that much re-usability value

- Triangular shapes = something different, playful visually, not great for storage & taking up space

After analyzing and sketching out some potential shapes, I have come to the conclusion that a cylindrical shape would work the best for the packaging. It is the most sleek and contemporary style that also looks the best for a secondary use within the home etc. Cylindrical shapes do not neccessarily fit together as well as rectangular/square ones do, but this storage element can be compromised for the luxury vibe of the brand.
