During my research, I discovered that sans-serif typefaces had the best readability for dementia patients. One study claimed that typefaces with very minor, small serifs would potentially increase the readability, but anything too elaborate would confuse the elderly.
A couple of typefaces were mentioned as being an ideal choice, two being Gill Sans and Arial.
In order to choose the most appropriate typeface for my wayfinding system, I started experimenting with a variety.

1. Myriad Pro
2. Arial
3. Gill Sans MT
4. Calibri
5. Franklin Gothic Book
6. Futura Extended
7. Lucida Sans
8. Segoe UI Historic
9. Tahoma
10. Tw Cen MT
11. Verdana
I found myself quite drawn to the typefaces that had the single story A rather than the double story one. I felt like these typefaces (e.g Futura and Tw Cen) had the best readability for the dementia patients as they were clearest and simplest to look at.
I have decided to wait until I have started designing my pictograms before I settle on a final typeface.
