OUGD603 - Kankan Moussa - Initial Ideas / Research

Orion Trade & Co are launching a new company, Kankan Moussa. The company is named after the founder’s city of origin (Kankan in Guinea-Conakry) and his father’s first name (Moussa).

The founder is an Innovation Architect focused on business development in West Africa. Currently based in the Leeds, UK, the company seeks to facilitate and develop partnerships with UK exporters to maximize sales within the West African region.

Prior to launch, Kankan Moussa are looking to commission a new logo that embraces their company values which are inspired by the Kola nut, important in Mandingue culture.

The logo should be inspired by the Kola nut but does not need to be a replica – be creative!

Consider the myth behind the plant, the ethos of the company and the colours of the nut.

Research;

-kola nut - red and yellow/cream
-split down middle

I came acorss this cartoon style image of a kola nut online;

I felt this could be a good starting point for my own design.

I began by tracing the outline of the nut on Illustrator.

I came out with this outline which I really quite liked. In a thicker weight I felt it was quite striking and eye-catching.

I then started experimenting with some potential colour ways. I looked at two palettes - an orange and pink, as a play on the typical red and yellow, and then a more traditional red and cream version.

I widened the gap/split down the middle of the nut as I felt this looked better visually.
