OUGD603 - Kankan Moussa - Final Designs

In order to answer the brief in an engaging and eye-catching way, I chose to use the Kola nut as my main focus for the logo. I centred around the idea of the ‘two parts’ being ‘harmoniously inlaid’ - this led to having the two separate blocks of colour underneath the black outline of the kola. After studying some images of the kola nut, I decided to stick with its original colouring of red and white, but to make this softer and easier on the eye, I chose a more cream off-white combined with a pink toned shade of red. I felt these better represented how the actual kola nut looks, whilst alluding nicely to the idea of the blood and the milk without being too harsh. The strong black outline of the kola is a contrast to the softer colours and is representative of the initial bitter taste of the kola, which then gives way to a sweeter taste - hence the colours layered underneath.

For the accompanying text, I chose to use a typeface called Heavy Trip - I felt this was perfect to represent the West African roots without being too cliché. The capitalized nature of the typeface comes across strong and formal, yet the handwritten style adds an organic element - which in turn relates to the natural environment the kola grows in. I also felt that the typeface worked really well alongside the black outline of the kola and really helped bring the logo together as a one.
