Today I took my ideas to a group critique in order to receive some feedback to help inform my designs.Below (fig1) is an picture of the designs I put up for the group to look at.
The general feedback I received was that the typeface definitely looks better with serifs - people said that the sans-serif version wasn't as effective and didn't represent my word as well. People said that the serifs were a great way of adding an extra element of 'plumpness' and that the sans-serif version was just simply too plain.
I was also questioned about how I could make the typeface portray the word plump without actually being plump. I found this a really difficult question and I was unsure how to answer as I think this would be a very difficult task. I also think experimenting with that may lead me down the wrong path as I do actually want my word to look plump.
My overall feedback in general was positive - people thought my designs were effective and very relevant to my chosen word. A suggestion was that I play around with the size of the ascenders and descenders, which is something I think would be quite interesting to try. People also said I could experiment with the x-height and try making this smaller or bigger. A smaller x-height I feel would make the word look perhaps a bit too small in general - when I think of plump I think of a larger style. On the other hand, making the x-height bigger may be a better option and would make the letters a good representation of my adjective.
