OUGD405 - Conventional Sign Systems


Today we have talked about conventional systems, what they are and the role they play within our world.

Pictograms:
- warn, guide or protect
- immediately decipherable

Semiotics:
- semantics
- sign and meaning
- dependent on context and knowledge of meaning

Syntax:
- set of rules, principles and processes that govern how the signs work together
- formal, unambiguous, succinct

Pragmatics:
- how context contributes to meaning of sign
- indictive - may or may not
- imperative - must not
- suggestive - appeal to readers and their feelings

                               


Shapes of signs:

Square:
- boundaries
- protection

Triangle:
- direction giving character
- symmetrical

Circle:
- feelings addressed more strongly
