Studio Brief 02 - Initial Ideas and Group Crit

Following my decision to use the adjective 'plump' as my starting point, I began experimenting with Clarendon typeface and created two basic initial ideas. The first being a more subtle approach, making the strokes thicker and rounded the serifs to give a more 'inflated' effect (see fig1 below).

My second idea was to really exaggerate the typeface, blowing it up and making it extremely thick and rounded. I also chose to remove the serifs on this particular idea (see fig2 below).

I left these ideas on my desk for people to review. See feedback in images below.

Many people suggested I shorten the ascenders and descenders, make the type appear 'shorter and stubbier'. There were also lots of comments about keeping the counters small, and perhaps playing around with the positioning of these by placing them less central. Playing around with kerning was also a suggestion, making the letters overlap and seeing what this looks like. They also said that the font was more legible in the first idea and would work better in a smaller point size, but I would like to experiment with making the second idea more legible too.
